Programs and Services

HIV Education and Services

Free and anonymous HIV counseling and testing is available by appointment.    Call the Health Department at 377-5213 for an appointment.  Community education related to HIV/AIDS is also available for individuals and groups.

Blood Pressure & Cholesterol Screening

Blood Pressure clinics are held each Thursday from 9:00 – 11:30 AM and there is no charge. 

 Cholesterol clinics are held the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 9:00 – 11:30 AM.  A blood sample is drawn from the arm and a complete lipid panel (Cholesterol, Triglycerides, HDL and LDL) is completed.  Individuals need to fast for 12 hours before cholesterol testing, drinking water and taking medications is okay.  Cost for the test is $12.

 Breast & Cervical Health Program

The Dawson County Breast and Cervical Health Program provides women’s health screenings to eligible women through arrangements with local physicians and hospitals.  The screenings include:

  • Mammograms

  • Clinical Breast Exams

  •  Pap tests

  • Pelvic Exams

  • Diagnostic Tests

To be eligible, women must be:

  • 50-64 years of age

  • Without health insurance

  • income eligible*

School Nurse

School nurses employed by Dawson County Health Department provide school health services in all schools in Dawson County.  Services include health screenings including height, weight, vision, hearing, dental and scoliosis.  In addition School Nurses provide medication supervision, health teaching and counseling.  There is no cost to individual students for the services of the School Nurse.

Communicable Disease Surveillance

Dawson County Health Department is responsible for surveillance and follow-up of communicable diseases that affect our County.  Health care providers, laboratories and veterinarians are required by law to report communicable disease to the Health Department and the Health Department is required to follow up to  assure that proper treatment and containment procedures are put into place.  All reports of communicable disease are confidential.
