Pool Closure Policy
Montana Department of Public Health & Human Services, Food & Consumer Safety Section

The Following items are considered critical items (more likely than other items to cause serious injury and/or death) and are cause for immediate closure of a pool under the state laws of Montana (either as a single item or a multiple violation).  Pool operators should self close a facility that has any of these critical items existing until the problem is corrected.

  • No Filtration (broken pump or other reasons)

  • No Sanitizer (out of sanitizer for whatever reason)

  • Low sanitizer (below 1.0 ppm chlorine or 2.2 ppm bromine)

  • Loose or unsecured main drain covers

  • Problems with gas chlorine storage, handling practices, or other problems of and immediate nature related to the safe handling and/or use of chlorine gas.

  • Clarity (must be able to see main drain from anywhere in or around the pool; or equivalent standard(s) as listed in the Pool Rules: anything less requires immediate closure)

  • Fecal accident

  • Adequate number of lifeguards (municipal pools only)

  • Pool or spa temperatures exceeds 104o F

  • Lighting adequate (see clarity standard above)

The following are reasons that a pool may be closed by the County or State Health Departments.

  • pH out of compliance (should be between 7.2 - 7.8)

  • Guard line not in place at break between shallow and deep ends (generally at 5' depth).

  • Personnel not currently trained in CPR on-site. Operator should keep copy of all current certificates on file in office.

  • Required Safety Equipment:

    • Lifepole or shepherd crook (poolside)

    • Ringbouy or rescue tube (poolside)

    • Backboard with head restraints (readily available)

  • Alkalinity not within parameters (80 - 200 ppm)

If you have questions regarding any of the above, call FCSS at (406) 444-2408 in Helena or (406) 247-4449 in Billings or your County Health Department (Dawson, Prairie and Wibaux Counties) (406) 377-5772.
